Hidden Door is taking on a striking outdoor location for this year’s festival, taking place 15 -19 September 2021, and is inviting artists to contribute to help shape the visual identity of the site.
This year’s event will take place in a large, enclosed industrial yard on the site of the old Granton Gasworks in North Edinburgh. The site is dominated by the epic Gas Holder Tower – a distinctive 157ft high structure and industrial heritage landmark. The tower will form a dramatic back-drop to the outdoor festival site, which will be transformed with bars, covered areas and 2 stages built back-to-back in the centre of the space, hosting a multi-arts programme of live music, dance, theatre, spoken word and visual art.
We are looking for innovative projects which will transform the visual aesthetic of the festival adding to the spectacular impact for visitors. We are particularly looking for site-specific works which engage with the visual identity of the surrounding area and which celebrate Granton’s heritage.
Proposals may also suggest working with particular areas or aspects of the site, such as the entrance gates, the fence line, the stage structures, or other features of the site (see photos below).
Suitable projects could include free-standing sculptural installations, architectural structures, works attached to or extending from pre-existing structures, murals, textile based works etc.
These can be pre-existing projects that can be redeveloped and adapted to work within this new setting, or an idea for an entirely new work.
The project must be realised and delivered within a budget of up to £2,500 to include expenses and artist fees.
Hidden door is a registered charity whose aim is to support emerging artists by creating opportunities for them to develop their practice and reach new audiences. We are looking for projects which allow artists to push the boundaries within their work and show a development of their artistic practice in some way.
We welcome applications from artists based in Scotland at any stage in their career, and particularly those who consider themselves emerging artists.
Hidden Door is following all Scottish Government guidance in planning for our festival, to ensure a Covid-safe environment for artists, staff and our audience. As such, all submissions will need to ensure they follow relevant guidance and restrictions. As part of your application you will be asked to identify any COVID risks that your idea poses.
To apply submit your proposal through this online form. Deadline for Proposals is 21 June 2021, 11:59pm
You will be asked to include up to 6 images of recent work and a short, relevant CV with your application.
